Barberry are a popular group of shrubs. This Genus offers a tremendous amount of choices for color accents to the northern landscape. Somewhat deer resistant due to their small thorns these shrubs perform well in both full sun and in partial shade. While their color is often much more vibrant if they receive at least six hours of good sun, they maintain their compact habit even in shade. Berberis 'Bailsel'
This introduction from Bailey Nurseries is a hybrid of Korean and Golden Japanese barberry and combines many of the best features of its two parents. The golden yellow leaves on this upright grower take on nice fall color with some red and orange tones. Golden Carousel® does best when planted in areas of light shade where the leaves are protected from fading or burning in late summer.

This Japanese barberry has an upright, columnar form and features red-purple foliage. Tiny yellow flowers bloom in spring and are replaced by glossy, bright red berries that persist well into winter. This is a great selection for structure and color in the landscape, especially effective in a perennial planting. Prefers well-drained soil and full sun for best foliage color.

Berberis thunbergii 'BailAnna'
New foliage emerges lime green with a contrasting orange/peach margin, which fades to green in summer. Forms a densely branched, spreading mound, which fits easily in smaller spaces. Can be used as a substitute for boxwood in colder climates where boxwood is not winter hardy.
